Craigslist, a scammer's paradise

Shopping for a second car, I decided to check out Craigslist. After a couple of hours of clicking around, I sent out 2 emails, below are the responses.

From Gloria and Tom Gustafson:

The car has 94,700 miles, automatic trans. It’s in perfect condition, no engine/electric problems, no accidents/liens/loans. Exterior no scratches, never been repainted, interior no rips/tears/stains, never smoked inside. I have all the car’s manuals, 2 spare of keys, title, documents. I’m selling the car because my child of only 24 died 4 months ago in a car accident, a drunk driver hit him and his fiancee. He was with his fiance’s car coming to our home at his little brother birthday of 10 years old. This 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer was his car and it brings me bad memories and that’s the reason I want to sell it.

From Ellen Tendell:

My name is Ellen Tendell , I’m emailing you regarding the 2004 Toyota Highlander that I have for sale. The car is in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (smoke-free). It has 68,000 miles, automatic transmission, 6 Cyl 3.3 L engine size, 4 wheel drive, burgundy exterior and tan interior. It has a clear title with no loans or liens on it. I’m selling the car because my 21’s years old son died 2 months ago in a car accident. A drunk driver hit him and his fiancee. He was with his fiancee’s car coming to our home at his little brother birthday. It was his car and it brings me bad memories and that’s the reason I want to sell it as soon as possible.

I emailed them back with my condolences and copied the response from Ellen to Gloria and Gloria’s response to Ellen, mentioning what a coincidence this all was. I haven’t heard anything back, I don’t think I ever will.

Tell me why are we, so blind to see
