Giga, my home server, has been acting up lately, greeting me in the morning with kernel panics. The machine has given me 4 years of non-stop service, I can’t really complain.

In order to diagnose the situation further, I may have to start pulling cards, memory and disk drives. Before I start down this path, my websites have to be moved to another location. It’s been great working on my websites locally, not having to deal with the slow upload speeds of my cable modem was worth doing it all myself.

Every cloud has a silver lining and the good news is that I found a hosting provider I really like, DreamHost. They run Debian on all their servers, which more than anything else, sold me on them. Giga runs Debian also, so it’s been really easy to transition my websites over, when I PuTTY in, I feel right at home.

All the websites, except PHPXref, have been moved up and the DNS changed, if you read this post, then you’re hitting the new locale. Giga is currently running an rsync process that’s uploading all the PHP cross references at PHPXref, from my calculations, using 48KBPS of my upload capacity, it will take 10 days to finish.

A heart, full of joy and gladness
Will always banish sadness and strife
So always look for the silver lining
And try to find the sunny side of life
