My mother, who turned me onto music, would get very emotional whenever she would hear about the loss of an artist she adored.
Andrew Gold passed away a few days ago, best known for being in Linda Ronstadt’s band. If you listened to music in the 70’s, chances are you heard Andrew backing the most popular singers of the time.
Andrew died of complications from renal cancer, he was 59.
Artists you’ve grown to admire have died from drug overdoses or accidents, Just Say No and seat belts got you safely this far, but now they’re passing away from diseases or natural causes.
In her later years, as more frequent stories about famous performers passing away hit the news, my mom’s emotions turned inwards. She still felt the loss of a good friend she had enjoyed on vinyl or film, but with each passing, she felt sadder for herself.
And when we die and float away
Into the night, the Milky Way
You’ll hear me call, as we ascend
I’ll see you there, then once again
Thank you for being a friend
