Duck Duck Go

What happened to that simple search engine that I first laid my eyes upon in early 2000, the one with the “Don’t be evil” motto?

That childlike innocence that we felt at the start of the internet has now turned to teenage distrust. WTF has happened?

Last week I switched my default search engine in Firefox to DuckDuckGo. What am I to do, from what I’ve read we’re in 1984 barreling towards Minority Report. Thankfully I never went the Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr or name your hyped service route. This blog is the extent of my online personal presence, of which I control.

Being a longtime geek does cause one to be suspicious, software is after all created by fallible humans, but what Snowden has unearthed, the extent of the collusion between the government agencies and the top tech companies is what can I say, sad to digest.

The Internet, such a promising place, a place to expand the knowledge of humankind, turned into a profiling mecca for greedy businesses and nosy governments. Data mining, I guess that’s what we’re good for, our likes, our preferences, our beliefs, our private lives.

My life is my own damn business, stick that in your query and see how many rows you get.

Sees the sun going down
And the eyes in his head
See the world spinning around
