Living with Ads for 77 days

On July 15, I started running Firefox without Adblock Plus.

Adblock Plus

This morning, I enabled Adblock Plus 2.6.11 in Firefox Developer Edition, just couldn’t take it anymore. Even though I’ve spent the last 2 months working on my sites, surfing outside my circle of usual places was frustrating and scary.

Websites that I’ve frequented in the past, with Adblock enabled, proved they didn’t care much about the user experience, after visiting them with Adblock disabled. Since these websites apparently just want to reap in ad money, my bookmarks have gone though a cleansing of sorts.

How many ads does a site need to display on their home page? I would say 3 seems to be about right, but I was hitting familiar sites and getting 8 to 10 ads thrown at me. Ads everywhere, not just in the header, footer and sidebar, there were ads inside the story I was reading.

I get it, these websites provide valuable information for free and ads are the only means to recoup their investment in time. But why go full shithead on us?

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind
Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign?
