Using Gmail for the last 10 years had me spoiled.
Ever since Gmail was launched, I’ve used their email service. With it’s excellent spam filters, I hadn’t seen any junk or scam emails for some time.
A few months back I launched a new site and decided to setup a POP account at my hosting provider for a comments and suggestions type of email account. All I can say is that it’s been very entertaining, I missed the lame scamming attempts and weird marketing techniques.
“There’s a sucker born every minute”, must still be true ‘cause all I see are the same type of scams employed today that were floating around 10 years ago. I’ve always held the belief that anyone buying a computer should go through mandatory certification, like you do to drive an automobile. With computers these days being so powerful and the majority of them hooked up to the Internet, I imagine the amount of 0wned home computers employed as spam traffickers is huge by now. Should they turn these botnets on us for nefarious reasons, we’re screwed.
Everyday I delight in perusing the comments and suggestions POP account in my Thunderbird email client. The Nigerian money scams, the emails that look so authentic to what your bank, or credit card company might send you. All I can think about is the poor unsuspecting people, given these marvels of modern slicon technology, mouse in hand, without a clue.
