While visiting the local mall, my grandchildren fell in love with Uggie, a Jack Russell Terrier, at Best Friends Puppy Boutique. After a few weeks living in an apartment with a 1 year old and a 4 year old, it became quite obvious that Uggie wasn’t a good fit.
Uggie is a cool dog, but a Jack Russell is not recommended for children under 8 years old. Something my son came to realize after seeing Uggie nipping at his 1 year old daughter and chasing his 4 year old son around the apartment. In my son’s own words “It felt like I had 3 small kids running around, constantly fighting, and I was the referee”.
What I don’t understand is how the proprietor of Best Friends Puppy allowed Uggie to go to a home with small kids, knowing full well that all available online information advises against it. Irresponsible is the word that comes to mind, not a cool act for such a high profile pet store.
Long story short, Uggie is living with me now. I have a house where he can run around the backyard and I have no small kids. The only problem I have is getting Uggie to play nice with Mookie, a Shih Tzu Yorkshire Terrier mix. Mookie is 4 years old and prefers to lay around all day, but Uggie wants to play, being the puppy that he is.
